‘Lamp’, Watercolor on paper, Adjustable LED lights, Wood board with holes, 24 x 36 inches
Cannonball Arts Submission (not linked from home page)
Project Description:
‘Lamp’ is simultaneously a watercolor depiction of a lamp and an actual lamp—a work of art and a utilitarian object, a painting and a sculpture.
The watercolor paper is fixed to a wooden box. LED lights shine through drilled holes in the box and the watercolor paper, gently illuminating the space around it. A two-dimensional power cord starts in the watercolor and emerges into a three-dimensional form at the bottom of the box, where it can be plugged into a wall.
Personal Relationship to the Work:
To me, ‘Lamp’ is joyful. Playing with ideas and concepts is something that comes most easily in times of inner peace. The work feels like a night light, shining pink and purple comfort onto me—reminding me that there can still be moments of calm where my mind can safely wander.
What makes this project a fit for cannonball arts?:
The work is not profound, political, or groundbreaking. However, it is intellectually fun, artistically playful, potentially humorous, and conceptually accessible. No artist statement is necessary—it’s a cute painting of a lamp that is also a lamp.
I believe fun, thoughtful, simple work like this has a place in contemporary art and at Cannonball Arts. Thanks for your consideration :)
